VidTips: Preproduction

Before shooting ask the following questions.

What is the main topic? Why am I creating this?

Are there visuals? Will music help?

What is the information being presented? How can I best show it?

These questions lead to the best method for capturing the information.

TIP: Know the music before you go shoot. This will help in deciding how to shoot the B roll. If the music is soft and touching, shoot long and touching shots. Is the music fast and eccentric, then shoot quick and quirky shots.

Before an interview, the following questions should be considered.

What is the main topic? Why am I talking to this person?

Who is the person and what do they have to share? Are there visuals?

What information are they presenting?

These questions lead to the best method for capturing the information.

TIP: Talk to the person being interviewed beforehand so your questions are better prepared and the subject has a chance to think through their responses.

TIP:Remember to cover the 5 W's and H:
who, what, where, when, why and how.
